All of our items are handwoven from wool, hemp, and/or cotton. All colors are natural or naturally dyed with plants. Our materials are sourced ethically and locally in Nepal, and everything is woven and sewn in Humla or Kathmandu by our artisans.
Our hemp is sourced from farmer groups in the Western highlands, the next district over from Humla. Hemp is a natural cellulose fiber that has many benefits including being anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-pest, and is extremely durable and long-lasting. It is a high-yield crop and a plant that sequesters nutrients into the soil, the very best for the environment!
Our wool is sheared from sheep or goats raised by Shepards in the Nepali Himalaya. Wool is a protein fiber traditional to our mountainous home where keeping warm is crucial in the long, cold, winters. It's natural, biodegradable, odor- resistant, water-resistant, fire-resistant, and durable. It also naturally comes in a variety of grays, browns, blacks, and whites.
We currently weave long panels that range from 1 inch to 12 inches in width, and about 24 feet in length. These panels are cut and finished into placemats or table runners, or cut and hand-sewn into rugs, pillow covers, and handbags/ pouches. We also make a fun accessory- a traditional glass-bead mountain choker called 'bearote' that many of the women wear daily.
